Overview

University of Oxford Magister Juris is a taught graduate law programme for outstanding law students from civil law backgrounds. It is the counterpart to Oxford’s Bachelor of Civil Law and uses Oxford’s tutorial-based teaching model for advanced legal study.

For UCO Business users, this programme is most relevant to the Law pathway, with links to International Law, Commercial Law, Corporate Law, Intellectual Property Law and Human Rights Law.

The programme is suitable for students from civil law jurisdictions seeking rigorous postgraduate legal education at Oxford.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold an undergraduate degree in law from a civil law jurisdiction.

Oxford assesses the application using the full application file, including academic record, written work, statement of purpose, references and evidence of suitability for advanced legal study.

Applicants must submit a statement of purpose of around 300 words explaining their motivation for graduate study at Oxford, relevant academic, research or practical experience, and areas of intended legal interest.

Applicants must also submit written work according to Oxford’s Faculty of Law application requirements.

English requirements

Oxford requires the higher English-language level for the Magister Juris.

IELTS Academic requirement: 7.5 overall, with at least 7.0 in each component.

TOEFL iBT requirement: 110 overall, with minimum component scores of Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 25 and Writing 24.

Oxford states that it applies this requirement strictly and does not grant admission to students with scores below the required level.
